Private George Alexander Wren

 

George Alexander Wren was born in late 1894 or early 1895 in London, one of seven children of stained glass artist Alexander Gravestock Wren and his wife Louisa Jane (née Rowntree). Around 1911 the family moved to Belfast. By 1911 George was living at 20 Baltic Avenue with his parents and his four surviving siblings and working as a law clerk.

Wren enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 1 October 1914 (No.1244 – later Corps of Hussars No.71299). On 28 April 1915 he embarked for France, where he was posted to A or C Squadron.

It is probable that by January 1918 he was serving at the regiment's Antrim reserve depot, and that at this time he embarked for Egypt with a draft of North Irish Horsemen, where he was posted to the Staffordshire Yeomanry (Queen’s Own Royal Regiment).

On 8 July 1919 Wren was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

After the war Wren lived in Edinburgh, Scotland. On 15 September 1920 he married Elizabeth Jane Evelyne Fisher.
